General Description of the Position

This is a non-tenure-track, 100% grant funded faculty-equivalent appointment under the direction of the co-Pl RCMI grant WCHBS and in close collaboration with Director Research Capacity Core of our NIH-funded Interdisciplinary Health Equity Research Center (IHER). The ideal candidate will have a broad understanding of data science regarding analytical methods, informatics, computational and information resources, data sharing policies. Required to possess a doctoral-level degree in a biomedical, biostatistics, machine learning or computational research field. This position requires a scientist with research experience in fields such as computer science, statistics. statistical genetics, bioinformatics, computational methods, artificial intelligence research methods and their applications in health research. The person in this position will have the primary responsibility leading the data science component of our Research Capacity Core, providing statistical expertise for the design, conduct, monitoring, and analysis of health research studies in basic, translational, clinical, and/or population science research for investigators at DSU. The successful candidate is required to have their own established research program relevant to health disparities with extramural funding. In addition, candidates must have at least one year of experience related to the position, including achievements to demonstrate the individual has received recognition as an expert in the field ( peer reviewed publications, honors , awards etc.). The person in this position will also contribute to the Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Research Design (BERD) core of the NIGMS funded DE-CTR ACCEL network.

Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advise and work with DSU researchers to apply novel data mining techniques, analytical tools, and computational methods in integrative analyses of complex health research data sets.
  • Work collaboratively with researchers in the development, evaluation, and implementation of strategies to optimize use of existing NIH analytical resources (e.g., data visualization tools, cloud resources) to advance translational research on health-related issues.
  • Provide researchers with advice on innovative data and analytical approaches to integrate Al/ML models across heterogeneous data types and sources (e.g., electronic health records and insurance claims data) to generate novel biomedical insights regarding translation of clinical and biologic findings into new intervention development and advising on resource needs required for such approaches.
  • Provide biostatistical services to DSU investigators including support with protocol development, study design, sample size / power calculations, and interpretation of study data; development, design and writing of new and/or revised statistical programs (say in SAS or R) and modeling based on requirements of ongoing research projects; conduct and interpret analyses of research data using descriptive statistics, inferential tests, and advanced statistical methods and models; evaluate and ensure statistical integrity, accuracy and validity of research data;  Maintain individual research program related to health disparities with extramural funds.
  • Contribute up to 50% effort to the Research Capacity Core of the Il-IER Center and BERD core of DE-CTR ACCEL providing consulting in biostatistics and research design for researchers at Delaware State University.
  • Advise and assist graduate students with designing and conducting their dissertation research projects;  Assist DSU investigators with preparation of journal articles, technical reports etc.
  • Mentor early-stage researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students in research methods.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across the university and with external partners to develop comprehensive approaches to health research.
Required Knowledge. Skills. and Abilities
The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation using some other combination of skills and abilities.
This individual must have experience conducting data science/bioinformatics related health science research with statistical methods, have a significant publication record and a track record of receiving external funding for their research. They must have excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, and the ability and willingness to assist and mentor early-stage researchers in biostatistics and quantitative research methods.

Qualification Standards

  • PhD or comparable doctorate in statistics, biostatistics, computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, bioinformatics.
  • Have made statistical contributions to published research as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Minimum one year of experience related to the position, including achievements to demonstrate the individual has received recognition as an expert in the field.
  • Experience analyzing large datasets using advanced statistical methods and software, such as SAS, R, or Python
  • Experience in data visualization techniques and tools (e.g., Tableau, R Shiny)
  • Experience in designing studies for and developing NIH grant submissions.
  • Extensive experience in statistical research methods and data analysis.
  • Track record of securing research funding from government and private sources.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, and evidence of national or international presentations.
  • Commitment to Mentoring and developing early-career researchers and students.
  • Substantial experience at the interface of data science and health research.
