Position Summary
The Post Doctoral Research Associate will be responsible for managing and analyzing large chest x-ray datasets, validating existing AI models for lung cancer screening, and helping to build infrastructure that supports this and other AI-driven projects. The position involves close collaboration between UIHealth and the VA, requiring eligibility to work at the VA. The postdoc may also have the opportunity to explore additional projects involving AI and computer vision in medical imaging, particularly in ophthalmology.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collect, clean, and preprocess large-scale chest x-ray datasets from UIHealth and VA hospitals.
  • Validate and refine an existing AI-based lung cancer screening model using real-world clinical data.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including radiologists, data scientists, and clinical researchers to enhance model performance and ensure clinical relevance.
  • Develop and optimize data pipelines and infrastructure to support medical imaging research, including storage, retrieval, and analysis of imaging data.
  • Engage in collaborative AI research on medical images from other modalities as time allows, with possible involvement in ophthalmic imaging projects.
  • Present research findings through peer-reviewed publications, presentations at academic conferences, and institutional seminars.
  • Contribute to grant writing efforts to support future research and development in AI-based medical imaging.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in medical imaging analysis, computer vision, or deep learning applied to healthcare.
  • Experience in creating and maintaining medical datasets.
  • Experience in AI infrastructure engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python and experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with chest x-ray imaging and/or lung cancer screening models.
  • Knowledge of healthcare data management, including experience working with clinical datasets or electronic health records (EHRs).
  • Familiarity with medical image preprocessing, segmentation, and model validation techniques.
  • Interest in AI applications in ophthalmology or other medical imaging fields.
