AIM-AHEAD & NCATS Health Data Science Training Program Call for Clinical Advisors (PAID Mentorship Opportunity), AIM-AHEAD

AIM-AHEAD and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) is inviting up to 10 clinicians to join the Health Data Science Training Program (HDSTP) and provide clinical guidance to a team of diverse early career trainees. The Health Data Science Training Program seeks to foster diversity in AI/ML research by training individuals from diverse backgrounds, empowering them to apply their AI/ML data analysis skills to address challenges faced by communities underrepresented in biomedical research.

From January to July 2025, 10 teams will complete training in health AI/ML modeling, and complete their first project using AI/ML to analyze real-world health data in the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative (N3C), one of the largest secure, de-identified enclaves of harmonized health data. Each trainee project team consists of 4 to 6 diverse early career professionals who have clinical science and data science backgrounds. All trainees have completed foundational training on using AI/ML in healthcare, and will be designing, conducting, and presenting an applied learning project using the National COVID Cohort Collaboration (N3C) Data Enclave.

Clinical Advisors meet with the teams 1-2 times per month, providing valuable insights to ensure the projects are clinically relevant, appropriate, and meaningful. In particular, teams seek guidance on inclusion/exclusion criteria, which variables to include in their models, correlation vs causation, interpreting results, and presenting to a clinical audience.

Seeking Clinical Advisors with subject matter experience to assist project teams on one of the following project topic areas:

• COVID-19 and/or long COVID
• Respiratory Health/Pulmonary Medicine
• Oncology
• Mental Health
• Neurology
• Cardiology
• Addiction Medicine
• Immunology
• Maternal Health
• Environmental Health
• Minority Health & Health Disparities
• Chronic Disease

Why Serve as a Clinical Advisor?

A Clinical Advisor meets with the trainee project team and provides subject matter expertise and guidance to ensure projects are clinically-appropriate, meaningful, and relevant. Serving as a Clinical Advisor has many benefits and opportunities.

Through your work with AIM-AHEAD & NCATS Health Data Science Training Program, you will:

• Be in the know about future AIM-AHEAD and AI funding opportunities
• Hone your leadership skills
• Develop and expand your network
• Give back to the research community

At the conclusion of the Program, each Clinical Advisor will receive a $2,500 professional fee, as allowed by their institutional policy.

Eligibility Criteria

• Clinical expertise in one or more of the clinical topic areas listed above.
• Expertise in AI/ML, statistical analysis, EHR analysis or, social determinants of health preferred, but not required.
• Prior mentorship experience.
• Associated with an organization from a variety of different sectors, such as industry, non-profit organizations, healthcare organizations, faith-based institutions, or academic institutions in good standing with their organization.
• Willing and able to meet and communicate with a trainee team by videoconference (e.g., Zoom), phone, and email from January to July 2025.

Expectations of Clinical Advisors

• Guide a team of NCATS trainees from January - July 2025, providing clinical insights to inform their health AI/ML research project (e.g., identifying clinically-relevant variables, ensuring appropriate interpretation of results, helping the team prepare a presentation for a clinical audience).
• Meet virtually (e.g., Zoom) with teams bi-weekly to guide the design and conduct the project.
• Provide continued support to project teams for adjustments to presentation for a clinical audience through September 15, 2025.
• Communicate with the team by email for ad hoc questions.
• Facilitate communication and networking with other clinicians, if needed, to address project questions.
• Encourage and amplify these diverse early career professionals as they develop their skills and careers!
